Better magnification will be found with the Canon 500D Close-up lens or with an extender. The 200 f/2.8L II is compatible with both the Canon Extender 1.4x and the Canon Extender 2x. All Canon EOS bodies retain AF functionality with even the 2x attached to this lens. Performance with the 1.4x attached is very good.
Re: Extender EF 2x I vs. EF 2x II. Canon says that both MkII teleconverters are said to be able to control internal reflections (to combat flare) better than their MkI versions. Optically the 1.4-II is the same formula as the 1.4-I, but the 2.0-II is redesigned for improved image quality. At 1200mm, the EF 600mm f/4 IS II plus Extender 2X III provides the longest focal length ever made by Canon or any other manufacturer with AI servo AF that is accurate and quick enough, and in a light-weight package. It is now possible to produce high-quality images of avian in flight at 1200mm and while handholding.

I took the combo out the other evening and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I used a 5D mark iv so PDAF autofocus is possible despite a maximum aperture of F/8.
I use the 2x extender quite often on the 600mm Canon II. And yes, there is an visible lower image quality. BUT the bigger size of the subject you get, is more worth than the lower image quality. If you body knows to deal with f8, the 2x extender is definitively worth buing. •••
